Can International Technological Diffusion Substitute for Coordinated Global Policies to Mitigate Climate Change?

چکیده
In short, yes. I use a multi-region integrated assessment model with fuel-specific endogenous technical change to examine the impact of Europe and China reducing emissions zero by mid-century. Without international technological diffusion this is insufficient avoid catastrophic climate change. But when innovation can diffuse overseas, long-run temperature increases are limited 3 degrees. This occurs because policy not only encourages green innovations but also dissuades dirty which would otherwise spread. The most effective package in emissions-reducing regions research subsidy funded carbon tax, driven short term direct effect tax on composition energy, later induced subsidies. Green production subsidies ineffective they undermine incentives for innovation.

Sustainable biochar to mitigate global climate change
Production of biochar (the carbon (C)-rich solid formed by pyrolysis of biomass) and its storage in soils have been suggested as a means of abating climate change by sequestering carbon, while simultaneously providing energy and increasing crop yields. Substantial uncertainties exist, however, regarding the impact, capacity and sustainability of biochar at the global level. In this paper we est...

Ian Roberts and Robin Stott (Nov 27, p 1801) call for collective action from health professionals against the causes of climate change. Students can have a vital role in the debate on the eff ects of climate change on health. The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) represents more than 1·2 million medical students from more than 100 countries. Climate change is a ...
متن کاملMarine reserves can mitigate and promote adaptation to climate change.
Strong decreases in greenhouse gas emissions are required to meet the reduction trajectory resolved within the 2015 Paris Agreement. However, even these decreases will not avert serious stress and damage to life on Earth, and additional steps are needed to boost the resilience of ecosystems, safeguard their wildlife, and protect their capacity to supply vital goods and services. We discuss how ...
متن کاملCombining price and quantity controls to mitigate global climate change *
Uncertainty about compliance costs causes otherwise equivalent price and quantity controls to behave differently and leads to divergent welfare consequences. Although most of the debate on global climate change policy has focused on quantity controls due to their political appeal, this paper argues that price controls are more efficient. Simulations based on a stochastic computable general equi...
